7th and 8th Grade CoEd Intramural League

From the desk of Chris Cordes, St. Charles Athletic Director:

Good Day,

I hope all of your CYO seasons are going well and the kids are having fun!

I am sending you this email to give some updates on the Intramural Basketball Program. We had planned to get our intramural season underway this month but do to some health issues and the holidays I was not able to coordinate. I'd like to thank you all for your patience.

This year our new Friday Night League was a huge success and we plan on continuing to offer this league in the end of August-September. So look out for emails about how to register!

Im happy to say that in partnership with St. Patrick Sports program we will be offering a new 3v3 league which will start in Febuary. There will be divisions for: Boys - 3rd&4th Grade, 5th&6th Grade, & 7th&8th Grade

Girls - 3rd&4th Grade, 5th&6th Grade, & 7th&8th Grade

The 3on3 format is a great way to learn the most essential parts of the game. Games will be played on Saturday morning at both St Charles and St Patricks. I believe this is a great platform to build new relationships and community. Watch for a flyer coming soon!

The St Charles Sports Program has been running a successful intramural program for quite some time now and I would like to continue that tradition. Due to time restraints and the establishment of the above new leagues this year we will only offer intramural to the 7th and 8th grade boys and girls. We will be doing a coed league open to all boys and girls in the 7th and 8th grades. Next year we will revisit the intramural program fully to include all grades boys and girls. Please see the attached flyer for information and registration.

All information can be found on our website and facebook page in the next coming days.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to email me @ chris@stcharleschargers.com

Regards,

Chris Cordes

2017 Picture Day Schedule

Saturday, October 28th is Picture Day for the St. Charles Sports Program.  Attached is a grid showing what time each team is scheduled.  This has been a very smooth, painless process for the last few years, and if everyone adheres to the following guidelines, this year will no doubt be a success as well.

  1. Please have your team arrive 15 minutes BEFORE they are scheduled for their picture in full uniform For example, you can see that Biddy Cheer is scheduled for 8:45. As such, they should arrive by 8:30.  Please let parents know that if they are late, their child may miss the team picture.

  2. Please ensure that team members received their picture forms PRIOR to picture day. These were given to the Team mom last week to distribute. If forms are filled out prior to when the children arrive, it allows for a much more organized process.

  3. Please let parents know that they are not permitted in the auditorium/gym during pictures and will be asked to wait outside.  We will allow the team mom to come in with their team to keep the team in line and quiet. But please refrain from taking pictures or getting involved in any of the process Let’s leave that to the professionals. If the child has a jacket, we ask that they give it to the parent before entering.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and your continued support of the St. Charles Sports program. Go Chargers!!!

Changes in our program

Hello hope your summer is going well!

This email is meant to give a little insight to some changes within our basketball program for the upcoming season. I will start with our intramural, K/1 clinic and CYO.

INTRAMURALS: In the past our intramural program which ran on Saturdays included boys and girls divisions consisting of 3rd thru 8th grade. The programs were mandatory for any player who was playing CYO for St Charles. The program was also open to any player so it was not parish based. If you lived in St Pats parish you could play intramurals in our program. There is no practice for this program just games.

The playing format was always regular 5 on 5 full court basketball and there were playing time rules to make all the players time even or close to it depending on the amount of players playing that game. For the most part the boys side of the program is solid. The girls side has had some issues with registration and the girls consistently showing up each Saturday. Last year I attempted to make the girls side 3 on 3 in the hope to have enough girls each week to play. In the early stages it worked but as time went on not so much. I also had two clinics ran by various H.S. coaches for free in which I made attending mandatory. It was a great success for those who attended and I have had all of those coaches contact me for this year!

K/1 CLINIC: This clinic is a great introduction for young players to develop a love for basketball. It runs on Saturday mornings at PS 23. It provides these new players with skills and a basic understanding of the rules of the game. Last year we offered any player interested to play on in the CYO K/1 Biddy division. It was a great success and we will continue to offer this option this year.

CYO: This program requires players 3rd thru 8th grade to tryout for the a team. In 2nd grade there is no tryout just an assessment to even the teams out.The CYO has three division A,B &C. Depending on the amount of players we could have multiple teams per grade and division. These teams are coached by coaches selected by me and have practice twice a week. Games for the most part are played Friday, Saturday, and Sundays. Times vary.

SO HERE ARE THE CHANGES:

1. Intramurals:

- NOT MANDATORY in order to play CYO.

- Decided to make 2 leagues to replace "Intramurals"

            1. Friday Night Charger League - starts 9/15 and costs $75.00

            2. St Charles Intramural League - starts Jan. 2018 and costs $75.00

Registration for these leagues are open boys and girls grade 3 thru 8.

Friday night Charger League registration closes 9/1

2.K/1 Clinic:

- will start 10/14 and have 8 sessions with an end of year party with a basketball show, dates will be posted soon. Just like last year if there is enough players interested we will have a K/1 Biddy team in the CYO K/1 Biddy division.

- registration will begin 9/1. The cost will be $150.00

3.CYO:

-CYO tryouts will be held 9/9 and 9/16. Sign up for this will be 9/1 thru 9/8. In order to tryout you must sign up during this period and show up to BOTH tryout dates.

-Upon making a team, CYO registration will be open from 9/20 thru 10/20. The cost this year will be 3rd thru 6th grade $300.00, and  7th and 8th grades $325.00. The additional cost for 7th/8th grade comes from a new stat system the cyo requires. It is island wide. The CYO will now be tracking basketball statistics for those grades.

- There will be payment plans available through our website.

-CYO Biddy (2nd Grade):

2nd graders will play in the CYO Biddy division, have 2 practices a week and games will be on the weekend varying times. The 2nd grade will have an assessment on 9/9 and 9/16. Times coming soon. They must also sign up during the 9/1-9/8 sign up period. The cost of 2nd grade CYO is $240.00 plus uniform fee of $75.00.

You must fall in the eligibility requirements to play for SCS. (live with in the parish boundaries,  played here last year, or attend SCS.)

I am very excited for this upcoming year. We will be hosting an open house for all sports(date to be determined). All of our sports will be on showcase (basketball, baseball, softball, track, swimming, and now possibly bowling and chess, waiting for cyo to give details)

As always if you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me via email anytime.

Thanks and look forward to seeing you soon!

This has been a very smooth, painless process for the last few years, and if everyone adheres to the following guidelines, this year will no doubt be a success as well.

2. Please ensure that team members receive their picture forms PRIOR to picture day. Your team mom or coach should have provided you with the form already. If forms are filled out prior to when the children arrive, it allows for a much more organized process.

Parent-Coach Advocate Program

The Role of the Parent-Coach Advocate:

The Parent-Coach Advocate will be readily available to the Parents and Coaches of the St. Charles Sports Program.  This program has been implemented to avoid or intercept any conflicts that may arise between coaches and parents and we will try to adequately resolve the issue at hand.  What we want to avoid is when communication stops between parties and animosity develops and then we have a bigger issue.  The goal of the advocate team is not to take sides, but to gather the details and have an open discussion of the current situation at hand.  We all must remind ourselves we not only represent our parish, our sports program, our community, our families, but most importantly our children.  Also CYO has implemented a new suspension policy of 30-day suspension no questions asked with additional disciplinary action from the program if necessary.

It is important that we establish guidelines and expectations for times when a parent of an athlete wants to work out an issue with their team’s coach. It is part of our approach to be open to conversations and to encourage working through problems.  Below are some guidelines.

LEVELS OF COMMUNICATION:

1. LEVEL 1: PLAYER-INITIATED CONVERSATION

a. First level is the athlete or coach involved approaches the coach or player on his or her own and starts a conversation.

b. We believe player to coach is the most effective and efficient means to solve these types of problems.

c. It also teaches athletes to always advocate for themselves down the road.

            2. LEVEL 2: PARENT COMMUNICATES WITH COACH

                        a. If the athlete or coach still continues to see an issue we ask the coach or parent to try and discuss the matter with each other.

b. After the meeting with coach or parent if the issue continues we ask the coach or parent to proceed to level 3 below.

3. LEVEL 3: PARENT EMAIL TO PARENT COACH ADVOCATE famato@stcharleschargers.com

a. If conflicts are not able to be resolved at Level 1, and Level 2 then we encourage coaches or parents to reach out to parent coach advocate.

If after Level 2 the issue continues please do not approach the coach or parent again.

WE ASK ALL COACHES AND PARENTS NOT TO INITIATE A SECOND CONVERSATION WITH EACH OTHER:

All communications should come through the Parent-Coach Advocate email.  This procedure is in place to avoid any emotional exchanges between coach and parent.

a.    We make it a policy to ask the coach or parent in these situations to send an email to (famato@stcharleschargers.com) with a detail explanation of the issue and request a meeting be set up to discuss.

2. The Parent-Coach Advocate will respond to the email within 24 hours and will set up a time for a phone conversation.

3.  At this time the Parent-Coach Advocate will advise with our Sports Director and discuss the next step.

4.  If the issue is something occurring at practice the Parent-Coach Advocate or Sports Director will attend a practice unannounced and watch the practice.

5.  After the issue at hand has been reviewed the Parent-Coach Advocate will proceed to level 4.

4. LEVEL 4: PARENT-COACH ADVOCATE WILL MEET WITH COACH OR PARENT

Parent Coach Advocate, Sports Director, and Coach will sit down to discuss the issue at hand.   We are hopeful at this point the issue will most likely be resolved. If not we will have a meeting with all  parties to see if we can reach a common ground to defuse the issue.

6th Grade Boys - 3rd Tryout

ALL 6th GRADE BOYS!!!!!!!!!

The Sports Committee is requesting that our 6th grade boys players participate in a 3rd TRYOUT.

The reason we are requesting an additional tryout is because a few of the coaches were unable to attend the 2nd tryout. Our Committee feels that in order to be fair to all the players, they should have an opportunity to tryout in front all of the incoming coaches.

Therefore, we are having a 3rd tryout on Wednesday 7 – 8pm at PS50.

A decision will then be made that night and posted on the St. Charles website Thursday morning. If your child has
made a team the coach will contact you later that night.

We apologize for any inconvenience but we feel it would be unfair to select a team based on one tryout. We thank you all for your understanding in this matter.

Any concerns you may have please email me (chris@stcharleschargers.com)and I will try to help as best I can
Thank You
