The St.Charles 7th grade girls’ basketball team is going to the championship after having a tough loss in the first round of the playoffs last season. They ended their season last year in fourth place, when usually every year before they made it to the championship game. I play for this team, and I know all the girls very well. I know how eager we are to beat this undefeated, first place team, Sacred Heart. We are ready to work hard and get a win in the championship together as a team, but before this, let’s go back to the semifinal game that put us on our way to the championship!
We played OLSS on February 23, where we were challenged with a very intense, close matched game. We were losing by most, a good 10 points, but found a way to to fight back and only be down by two in the 3rd and 4th quarters. During the game we had many massive plays that changed the game. Caitlin Sweeney scored 3 three’s along with her very calm play throughout the whole game. Everyone had a great impact on the game and did their roles. Danielle Williamson played a great game being the one to mark their best player. She unfortunately, fouled out but we all picked ourselves up and played 10 times better. Faye Vidal played her first game back after a 5 week injury on her foot. She played a tremendous game, considering it was her first game back. She crossed up one girl and made the basket, it was a great play! Gianna Carruba pursued to hit a lay up, along with Abby Bocola and Amanda Cerrota being in the game for little time but having two great baskets that boosted up our score to put us back in the game. Being in the game with this team was a great experience with all of the intensity and accomplishments in the air. Having to mark one of the tallest girls on the Island, I held my own, and got called for a few fouls, but I played hard for my team. We ended up winning the game by only two points when Ryan Ford scored a clutch basket in the final seconds of the game. Once the other team touched the ball the time ran out and we won the most intense game of our season with a final score of 39-37. I am so proud of my team and we are so excited to go to the ship. To see the results of that game, go to the article Ryan Erwin wrote called “The Final Stand”.
